Entry #38 Day 29
Last night was a repeat of other sleepless nights, I kept closing the storm flaps when the rain woke me up and then opened the storm flaps when I was sweating too much. Apparently I must not have awakened quickly one time because I woke up this morning with puddles inside the tent. I was feeling a little tired but ok because I knew it was going to be an easy 48 mile day. I grabbed breakfast and dried my gear in the campground laundry. I met the bike rider from New Mexico his name is Joe, I also met his dog Amy, Joe pulls Amy in her own trailer. The guy rolls his own cigarettes........I think they were cigarettes?
When I plugged in my phone this morning this little fella jumped out of the electrical box, I am still not used to them yet.
I also said good bye to my next door camping Neighbor Dave and his wife Laura. They were at the campground with their 3 kids waiting for the fuel pump in his pickup truck to get replaced, not a great way to end their vacation but he was a good sport about it, you got to respect that.

This was the bridge that crosses the St Mary river to bring you into Florida.
I was so glad to read the sign that said they were open for business, don’t know what I would have done if they were closed.
Delaware could learn a few things from Florida about welcoming people to their state.
Did you read the part about welcome to the Sunshine state, this was about a quarter mile down the road from that sign, I’m calling bull@#$% on the sunshine state part, this was the first of numerous deluges throughout the day.
This is a picture of the road I took heading for the ferry, it was about 5 miles and without a doubt the scariest most dangerous roaof the trip so far. While traveling this road the skies opened up again and when the big trucks went by it was like someone threw a 5 gallon bucket of water right at you, so I decedided to stop for lunch. I stopped at the Chicken Hut, the waitress had a tee shirt on that said “only the Rooster had a better piece of chicken “ so I knew it was my kind of place, nice and classy.
While ordering food I asked about the ferry and to my disbelief I found out the ferry was closed for repairs to the dock, I had no choice but to travel back on the scary road and then ride through Jacksonville. I then remembered what Joe the cyclist who has pedaled through Canada, the US and Mexico said about Jacksonville, he told me it was one of the worst cities to cycle trough, plus it added 20 miles to my trip and oh yah I got a flat on my back tire.
I have no pictures of Jacksonville, I had 3 people yell at me for reasons I don’t know why, one lady said “I hope you get your ass busted”??? The only thing I liked about Jacksonville was watching it get smaller in my rear view mirror.
I was so soaking wet by the time that I got to the coast I checked into a low budget hotel, the thought of playing in the rain tonight was too much to handle, I could really use a good nights sleep after my 48 mile day turned to a 68 mile day. It’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow, They might need to revisit that Sunshine State thing. Oh and it is pouring outside as I write this.

We absolutely loved meeting you at the KOA camp! I’m so glad Dave got to pick your brain a little bit. If I wasn’t chasing three wild babies I would have sat at your picnic table all night listening to your stories. We look forward to your updates, and pray the trip continues to be safe. You should be golden now that you’ve lived through Jacksonville. 😉
ReplyDeleteIf you ever come through Huntsville, you have a room with us(or a backyard to camp in, whatever tickles your fancy)! Safe travels, hopefully we’ll cross paths again.
Well thank you Laura, I enjoyed meeting you ,Dave and the kids, they are very well behaved kids by the way. Thank you for the offer of the the place to stay, I am not sure if my wife would be too keen on me taking another trip for a while, I hope the truck got fixed and things went smooth after that.
