Entry #48 day 39

Took a ride today around Key West today, did about 20 miles it was nice and relaxed. I tried to follow the waterfront as Much as I could.


This is the Key West I remembered.


Not so much the other side of the street.


Checked out the cruise ships, now I want to go on another cruise.



Took a picture of this cool Kapok tree, It would take one heck of a hurricane to knock this one over...check out that stance.

Visited Fort Zachary Taylor, It’s just not as much fun visiting a fort without my wife, she loves visiting forts.




A local beach.


Stopped to put more air in that leaking back tire, not riding hard enough  to heat up and expand those air molecules today. That tire was brand new at the beginning of this trip, no wonder I am getting so many flats.

Mermaid Crossing? I don’t know exactly how that would work.


This resteraunt was recomended to me when I asked who had the best Key Lime Pie in town, It was A 10 dollar piece of pie and it was marginal at best, Todd your Key Lime is the best so far.

Hemingways house and a light house didn’t bother with either.



I know why this chicken crossed the road, check out the beach.


I saw this bike and I was reminded off a quote from one of my favorite books “when I suffer a hardship its an adventure, when they suffer a hardship its a way of life” It kind of makes you think.


Checked with a local bike shop today and the owner thought that my plan to rent a car to get to Miami and take the train was my best option to get everything home. I will probably post a little bit about my train ride, mostly because I have never taken a train and I think it might be interesting.

So here it  is my ticket home, I rented this from Enterprise for a one way rental to be dropped off at the Manchester Airport. Hey and take notice Amtrak all my gear that you didn’t think would fit in a baggage car, look at that it all fits in a Nissan Rogue, if you would like you can hire me as a consultant I can show you how to load a train. So I took off from Miami International around 10:30 AM and drove all the way to Maryland where I stopped at the  Chesapeake House Service Plaza at around 2 AM, did about 1100 miles on Sunday, I just wanted to get past Washington so I wouldn’t have to deal with the traffic on Monday morning. I did fuel up at South Of the Border, no road trip to or from Florida is complete without stopping at this cool place. Entry #37 day 28

Woke up early this morning hoping that I might just make it to Florida, its surprising how much crossing into a new state can energize you. Grabbed my free waffles in the hotel lobby, I now give other hotel guests free lessons on using the waffle maker, i’m Getting pretty good at making waffles. Oh yah and grabbed a piece of fruit for the ride, there are some good points to staying in a hotel. The winds were blowing hard today, I had a tail wind for the first hour so I was averaging about 17 MPH, and then the wind shifted and I dropped to about 9 MPH for the rest of the day. This was my scenery for about 40 miles. Until you would come up to a sprawling Metropolis like this. I think this store stopped selling Coke products when it closed during the Great Depression. Finally a funny sign, you can tell its closed because it says shut....if it was open it would say Mon In. Did almost 4 miles on this dirt road, this gives you a lonely feeling. ...

Entry # 47 Day 38

Well that was my last night of getting eaten alive by mosquitos and waking up in a puddle of sweat, at least it didn’t rain....much. I ate a good breakfast trying to use up some of the food so I didn’t have to carry it the rest of the way ( like I would notice the weight of an extra envelope of oatmeal missing from the trailer) I guess its just something you do to make yourself feel better. I go to ride away and find that my rear tire is almost flat, I am stunned and make up my mind right away that I will not change out this tube, mostly based on the fact that I don’t have a replacement tube and I forgot to patch the old tube with the hole in it.  I came up with a theory called “the leaky tire theory” if you pump the tire up and ride fast the tire will warm up, the air molecules will expand and wont be able to fit through the hole. I had to stop twice in the first 8 miles to pump the tire back up but after that the leak slowed down. I took this picture after passing by ...
