Entry #34 day 25

Not a lot to talk about today, It was a lousy day due to the roads that I had to take. If you look close in the picture you can see that the rumble strip is cut way into the already tiny shoulder. If you ever rode a bike over a rumble strip you know its enough to shake the fillings right out of your head, I did about  20 miles on this road....no fun. No nice sunrise picture today, or at least I couldn’t see it from my hotel room, I would rather have been camping.

Every once in a while there were little safety zones so you could catch your breath and settle your nerves. The worst part of riding on Rt 17 was the sudden push of air from the tractor trailers followed by the sudden vacuum that pulled you towards the trailer, if every day of riding was like todays riding I would have quit by now. I can not wait to get out of South Carolina, I don’t care about your “smiling faces and beautiful places” If your on a bike its not worth it. Ok now I’m done complaining about SC.

Zoinks Scooby its Old man Dithers and the haunted plantation.

This was a side road off Route 17, that I took for about 4 miles. I was sad to leave the mosquitos, ticks, snakes, gators, and Carolina Panthers knowing that I had to go back on Rt 17.

As I was riding back to Rt 17 I had to wait for this train to pass, you can see Rt 17 in the distance between the two rail cars. The train just stopped there so I waited for about 20 minutes and the train was going no where. I really wanted to slide my bike under the train but I thought better of it, I did not want to be that guy on the news. I pushed my bike down the track for about 20 train car lengths and then crossed about 100 feet behind the train, I then walked back the same 20 train car distance to get back on Rt 17. It was about an hour delay.

About 10 miles down the road my trailer got its 3rd flat tire, 2nd time in SC, I found a small piece of wire stuck in the tire. Hey how about cleaning up some of the debris from your highways. Now I really mean it no more complaing.

I stopped here for a taste of peach cider, it was delicious, I bought a blueberry- peach scone with a lemon seltzer water and enjoyed them while sitting on a bench swing, this was the high point of my day.

I found this poor little fella on my trailer, it kind of bummed me out because I love butterflies, at least it wasn’t a Monarch, I have a special place in my heart for Monarchs. This was a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, I put it in a plastic bag and pressed it in a book, we will see what happens.

This was a tough day for me, I did 63 miles, I am in a hotel in Beaufort SC right near Paris Island and I hope to be in Georgia tomorrow. I got Georgia on my mind.
