Entry #33 day 24

Another nice sunny morning, a good nights sleep, two packets of apple cinnamon oatmeal, cup of coffee but still feeling a little tired. I am hoping that a couple nights sleeping in a hotel will help make me feel a little more rested.

I was excited to be getting off Route 17 and taking a trail, especially a trail named after my favorite revolutionary war hero Francis Marion “The Swamp Fox”, speaking of military hero’s I will be thinking about Major Assburn today due to the fact that I had no clean Riding shorts to wear, tonight’s laundry night.

The further down the trail I got the worse the trail was. The grass and plants were up to my waste and there were logs across the trail, I sprayed Deet on my legs in case there were ticks. I met 2 guys on the trail, they were doing trail maintenance, I asked them if there were ticks out here and they said “oh heck ya”.  If ticks like dark moist areas of the body then I was a rolling all you can eat buffet, so I put on my rain pants and sprayed the pants with deet, I hope it worked. I thought this giant pole was a little over kill, I could just barely get my bike past it.

A cool swampy picture.

This is what I looked at for the next 17 miles, I could not believe I peddled over 30 miles before I found a place to buy more water, I was running low on water and it didn’t help that the only thing I had to eat were peanuts with sea salt. During this time Iwas thinking about all the dead possums I have seen on the side of the road, I thought if I ever encountered a possum face to face I think I would play dead, then the possum would either walk away confused or we would both be laying on the ground peeking to see if the other had left yet. If anyone reads this Blog they get a little idea how my brain works, this is why when my wife says “what are you thinking about?” I usually say aw nothing much.

The USS Yorktown which I found out you can camp on, that was a big missed opportunity.

A nice bike lane on a beautiful bridge, a couple more bridges like this and my bridge phobia could be cured.

Now I know that Cogswell Cogs are made in Charleston, I wonder where Spacely Space Sprockets are made?

I tried to take a picture of the cool downtown buildings but it looks like a poorly executed Abbey Road picture.

Cool looking buildings, cute little neighborhoods, I wish I could have spent more time here.

I rode down to the Battery, it was beautiful, put this city on my list of cities to visit again.

I am staying in a hotel about 10 miles South of Charleston, did my laundry and I am watching the Pats. Not looking forward to riding on Rt 17 all day tomorrow but maybe I will find some more road treasure like the nice Gerber knife I found yesterday.
