Entry # 24 Day 17
This picture was taken in Elizabeth City it looked like it was gonna be a nice day, I only had 50 miles to Kitty Hawk and the outer banks, I was looking forward to this milestone.
Unfortunately the day felt more like this. Don’t untie the dock lines she might sink.
I have no pictures of the first 20 miles of the trip because I was riding on a 4 lane highway with no breakdown lane, at times the highway traveled along a swamp and it was then that I ran over 4 dead water moccasins one of which was a fresh kill and still very plump, could not swerve for fear of being hit by a car. After a while the road did improve and it was about this time that it started raining.
I saw a gentleman under an awning doing wood carving with a chain saw, the name of the business was Hedgehog woodworks and the gentleman was none other than Hedgehog himself, he invited me to park under his awning and we talked for quite a long time. Hedgehog had told me about a wood carving that he had worked on with his brother, this particular carving was an eagle that was used in
the movie “Tammy” staring Melissa McCarthy. The rain let up we said our good byes and I was on
my way. Here is his website Hedgehogswoodworks.com

I found this poor fellow about 5 miles down the road from Hedgehogs place, it kind of bummed me out, I don’t know who tried to camouflage him but they didn’t do a good job.
I have no idea what this is .....But sign me up.
If everybody could park like this we could make parking lots smaller but I guess parking garages would have to be a lot taller.
I took these pictures for the Grand kids, don’t worry kids the monster truck is no problem for the Rincon.
Here is probably the worlds fastest mailbox and Grave Diggers Grandad.
I had to cross this Humungous bridge to get to the outer banks, the bridge has a tiny breakdown lane But fortunately the left lane was closed for bridge repairs so I used the closed down lane to cross, I have never been so happy to see a work zone as I was today.
It was great to see this sign, I feel like I hit a huge Milestone. It was odd, on the ground about 10-15 feet past this sign, in the breakdown lane I found a Dutch to English dictionary, I figure I will just keep my eyes open for anyone wearing wooden shoes, scratching their head and looking confused maybe I can help them.
I stopped in at this Firehouse and found out from a very nice administrative assistant that The Hatteras Ferries were running, such a relief to know I can run the length of the outer banks.
I checked into my hotel and again thanks to the weather I am not camping, I know what you’re thinking, I’m a wimp but at least I’m a dry happy wimp.
To finish off the day I thought a nice therapeutic swim in the ocean would help heal the regions of my body that have endured a lot of miles in the saddle. To quote George Constanza “The seas were rough that day my friend” so I only waded in belly deep, for fear of becoming a victim of the Rip tide, the water was warm and felt great. Unfortunately I failed to take into account the walk back to the hotel with a bathing suit full of sand, the whole therapy thing was a bust, maybe I will have better luck tomorrow.
